What Is a 2290 Tax Form?
The Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return (HVUT) or Form 2290 is a Federal Excise Tax on heavy vehicles operating on public highways at registered gross weights equal to or greater than 55,000 pounds. The Form 2290 is due by August 31 for the period running from July 1 to June 30 annually. You must present a copy of your HVUT Schedule 1 to renew your license plates each year.
In short, it’s an additional IRS tax filing that needs to be filed every year for most trucking companies. There are a few vehicles that are exempt from filing their HVUT, that criteria can be found here.
