Apex Capital’s Top 3 Tips for Staying Fit On the Road

Now that the New Year is here, it’s time for the New Year’s Resolutions to start. According to The Huffington Post, 21% of people vow to lose weight and 14% resolve to exercise more in the New Year. Getting fit and heart healthy doesn’t have to mean spending a fortune on a nationwide gym chain or buying expensive equipment. Apex Capital found that there are plenty of workouts you can do with just your body weight that can get your heart rate up and easily work into your daily routine.

In Apex Capital’s post, Healthy Snacks for Truckers, we share a good guide to help you make healthy choices on the road and keep your calories under control, but as many New Year’s Resolutioners know, it’s hard to get results without exercise. Here are Apex Capital’s top 3 tips to get you moving, keep your resolution, and stay fit while on the road.

  1. Take a run or walk: This is a great way to get some fresh air and explore a new city. Taking a run or walk, when you make a stop on your route, is a great option because it doesn’t require a large time commitment. Even running or walking for one mile is a great way to get steps in, get your heart rate up, and release endorphins. If you don’t have the space to run or a good path, then remember that 34 laps around your truck is a mile. Track how many times you can make it around your truck and see if you can get more laps in each time you stop.
  2. Try Isometric Exercises: These common exercises can easily be done if you’re sitting in your truck. Just be sure to do these when your truck is in park. Simply squeeze or activate your muscles, holding the contraction for a few seconds, then release. These exercises help you burn calories, reduce stiffness in your joints, and can even improve your mood.

Shoulder shrugs: To easily release tension in your shoulders, lift your shoulders up to your ears, hold for 8-10 seconds and repeat.

Ab squeeze: Squeeze your abdominal muscles as though you’re trying to touch your ribs to your stomach, hold for a few seconds, then release and sit up tall. Repeat this every few minutes all day long to strengthen your core, which can help lessen lower back pain.

Ankle and wrist rolls: Ankle and wrist rolls are a great way to improve blood circulation and loosen up your joints. Roll the ankles in a clockwise motion three times, then counterclockwise. Roll each wrists 10 times clockwise, then 10 times counterclockwise.

  3. Jump rope: Get old school with jumping rope! Jumping rope is a great way to get your heart rate up and get a good sweat in. This activity can be done in a parking lot, at a rest stop or in a hotel. As long as you have enough room and the ground is level, you can get a great cardio workout in. Jump ropes are inexpensive and don’t take up room in the truck, making it a perfect way to stay fit.
