4 Tips for Truckers to Stay Committed to their Health and Wellness Goals

The trucking lifestyle can make it difficult for drivers to stay committed to their health and wellness goals. Because a trucker’s job comes with a different set of challenges and stressors, it’s challenging to stay motivated and keep a healthy eating or fitness routine.

We asked our clients what they do to stay on track when they are on the road and here are some of their tips.

Stick to a Workout Plan:

We get it; life can get in the way sometimes. When schedules get turned around or stress gets to you, it can be easy to blow off that workout routine. When moments like these happen, it helps to have a plan to fall back on. By planning out your workout routines, you will be more likely to stick to them. Whether it’s running, jumping rope, lifting weights or even doing isometric exercises, as long as you’re moving, you are doing your body good. Exercise can even be a stress-reliever, which is another reason not to skip that workout. Need some ideas on workouts you can do on the road? Check out our blog post for exercise ideas specifically for truckers.

Use a Food Tracker:

The old saying goes “you can’t work off a bad diet,” so it is important to make sure you are fueling your body with healthy foods. One way to start or maintain healthy food habits is by tracking your food. Writing down what you eat everyday helps you know you are staying within your calorie goals and eating the right kinds of foods. You can write your food down on a notepad and keep it in your cab or you can use free smartphone app, such as MyFitnessPal. Apps, like MyFitnessPal help you track your water intake, exercise and even feature a database of food, so you can look up exactly how many calories are in that burger you are about to eat. Sometimes just knowing the nutritional value of your food can help you stick to your health and fitness goals.

Change Your Workout Up:

It can be boring doing the same workout every stop. Boredom can play a big role in slipping health and wellness goals, so when you feel bored with you workout routine, visiting websites like www.7-min.com can help you find new ways to workout.  This website gives you a different workout to do every day: 30 for 7 minutes. Featuring exercises like jumping jacks, wall sits, and push-ups, this site programs a different workout each time, so you are surprised by what’s coming next, plus there’s even a trucker-friendly mobile app allowing you to do the workouts on the road.

Ask Your Fellow Trucker:

You don’t have to be alone in your health and fitness journey. Sites like The Healthy Trucker and Team Run Smart offer resources where truckers can search and find convenient and practical workout routines and health tips they can use on the road. Trucking forums and message boards online can be a great place to ask for advice on health and wellness tips from the trucking community. From healthy truck stop options, to workout routines you can do in your cab, your fellow trucker can be your best resource for tips to keep a healthy and fit lifestyle.
