3 Tips to Avoid Stress on the Road
by Apex Capital | February 12, 2014
We know that a trucker’s work is tough. As a profession with longer hours than most, and pressures ranging from CSA scores to ever-changing regulations, stress can easily affect even the most composed driver. Because truckers are separated from their friends and family for long periods of time, trying to get home quickly can intensify and increase stress.
Never fear truckers! We have a few tips to use when feeling stressed on the road.
- Listen to Relaxing Music: This is the quickest and easiest way to change your mood. By listening to a calming or relaxing song on the radio, you can stop stress right in its tracks. If a calm, relaxing song puts you to sleep, try a positive, happy or upbeat song instead. Focusing on the positives of life, can shift a negative thought to an optimistic one, turning around your mood and your day too.
- Get Some Sun: If your stress seems to pop up in the cold, winter months, it could be caused by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a type of depression that occurs at a certain time of the year, usually in the winter. Symptoms of SAD include loss of energy and overall moodiness. The official causes of SAD haven’t been determined, but experts think it may be caused by a lack of sunlight and Vitamin D. When your skin is exposed to sunlight, your body is able to produce Vitamin D. Unfortunately, UVB rays cannot be absorbed through the windshield, so make sure to step out of your truck for five to 30 minutes a day, which will allow your body to produce all the Vitamin D it needs.
- Exercise and Eat a Healthy Snack: According to WebMD, stress can cause low energy, headaches, an upset stomach, aches and pains, insomnia, chest pain and rapid heartbeat. This is another great reason to make healthy food choices and get plenty of exercise. If you need help getting started, check out our blog for healthy tips and exercises you can do on the road.
